Options for Reproduction

If you would like to avoid passing on the condition, here are some options for reproduction.

In Vitro Fertilisation

This is a process in which egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside the body. This is a good treatment for infertility, or in the case of our patient, who may not want to pass his disorder on to children. The way In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) works, is the females eggs are retrieved from her body, along with a male's sperm, (here you may want to find a sperm donor). Then, in a process called insemination, the sperm and egg are placed in incubators, where fertilization can occur. Then, typically, a single sperm is injected into an egg, and the growth and health of the embryo is monitored for 1-6 days, where it is placed back into the woman who will then carry the growing baby.

Chances of Success

30-35% In women under 35
25% In women aged 35-37
15-20% In women ages 38-40
6-10% In women over 40

Embryo Screening

This allows couples to know the risk of transmitting a genetic disease. This requires extracting a cell from an embryo (related to IVF) to analyze the cell's DNA. Embryo Screening can be a way of determining an embryo's chances of developing possibly lethal conditions.
